Baseball for Kids Newsletter

November 15, 2010           Volume 1, Issue 1

Fellow baseball enthusiasts, welcome to the very first Baseball for Kids Newsletter. Thank you once again for your support. Please feel free to share your thoughts, comments, suggestions, ideas, stories, and drills, so they can be shared with the Baseball for Kids community.

In this first issue, I would like to describe a little of what Baseball for Kids is about, so you have a better understanding of what to expect.

Baseball for Kids
MISSION
Baseball for Kids’ mission is to use the sport of baseball as a tool to teach kids life lessons that transcend the baseball field.  The sport of baseball is by nature a very negative game. Being successful in only 3 out of 10 attempts in any other sport is considered a failure. However, in baseball you are considered a STAR by just being successful 30% of the time when batting.  This means that kids will experience failure 70% of the time. If a kid can learn to remain positive when going through the adversities that the game of baseball provides, he will probably fair very well in life.

One of the lessons that I emphasize to kids constantly is that how we react after a mistake is more important than the mistake itself. Mistakes or failures will happen. The key is to recognize what we did wrong and to make adjustments. One of the hardest things for kids to master is staying positive after a mistake.  Fortunately, if they stick with baseball for any length of time, they will have many opportunities to practice this concept. In my opinion, this one lesson will probably have the greatest impact in their life, since things happen that we have no control over. But how we react will likely determine the outcome.

GOAL
We look at a player as a "whole person", rather than just a baseball player.  Our goal is to develop the whole person, which will essentially make them a better baseball player, student, friend and any other role that they might represent. This was one of the key concepts that the Legendary Coach John Wooden talked about. He considered himself a teacher more than a coach. However, I took the following diagram from the book “The 7 habits of Highly Effective People” by Steven Covey. In Habit 7, Sharpen the Saw, he talks about the four dimensions of the whole person.

STRATEGY
Baseball for Kids pursues its mission by coaching Little League teams/Baseball Traveling Clubs, providing Clinics, and organizing tournaments, so kids can compete in a safe and fun environment.

Until next time...
